Pretending To Listen To Someone Talk

Here's a trick I have used throughout the years, and it really works. Next time you're in some boring conversation you do not wish to be in, but you don't want to start a fight when the person realizes and calls you out on not listening, do this: Space out while the other person yammers on about whatever useless nonsense they feel the need to vomit out onto you. Wait for them to stop talking. When they finally shut up, just repeat one of the last major events or things they were talking about, but put a question mark at the end of it. Example: Boring Person: So I was driving to work the other day and I realized I forgot to look in the... blah blah blah... so the guy says, "That was yesterday!" And I was like, "What?" [PAUSE] You: It was yesterday? Boring Person: Yeah! I can't believe it, you know? Yammer blah blah... Get the idea? Sounds stupid but it totally works. You can also try adding things like, "that's crazy" or, "I can't believe it." Believe me. I've done this for years and I have yet to be busted. |
